And Now...

Fit Friday with Nichole...

The heat here! If you live in my neck of the woods you have been hiding inside or at the pool. Any where you can go to get out of these 100 degree temps that surround us.

I see a few of you sun seekers outside running at 3 in the afternoon while my car is glaring 101 at me.
I am generally one to get up early and avoid working out in the heat, but there are some benefits to the heat so after long summer nights I remind myself that it is okay to embrace the heat.

Heat adaptation definitely produces improvements in fitness. Exercising in the heat increases the stress load of your training. When your body responds by increasing circulation and sweating, you become more efficient at working out across a range of temperatures and conditions.  This means that you’re more likely to PR your next race or lifting session regardless of temperature and condition.  You also experience these benefits quickly.  As little as five sessions of high-temperature exercise are sufficient to lead to improvements in heart rate and sweat rate.

You also get the benefit of increasing your lactate threshold. (Let’s give a quick short and easy explanation of lactate threshold; Lactate threshold, also known as anaerobic threshold, is the fastest a person can perform aerobic exercise in a steady state without fatiguing.) Adaptations that occur in the heart as a result of training in the heat, increase your cardiovascular capacity and your ability to do intense work for longer periods of time.  It makes sense to take advantage of training in summer’s intense heat if you want to set personal performance records this fall.

So there are definitely reasons to throw some hot workouts in. Now let’s talk about how to do it safely.
